“He raised you to believe love made a man weak. The truth is that love was the only thing he feared.”
The recording distorted.
Then she said something that changed everything.
“Adrian, Lily is not only Matteo’s daughter. Her blood carries the key to destroying Salvatore’s empire.”
The video ended.
I replayed the sentence.
Her blood carries the key.
Behind me, Elena whispered, “That’s why they want her.”
I turned.
A white bandage covered the inside of her arm.
“What do you know?”
“Not enough.”
“Elena.”
She met my gaze.
“Matteo told me Lily was born with a genetic marker shared by women in his mother’s family. He said an encrypted Romano account could only be unlocked by biometric confirmation from that bloodline.”
“My mother’s bloodline.”
“Yes.”
“Then why not use my mother?”
“Because she refused.”
The truth became clear.
Salvatore had brought Lily into my house because he needed access to her.
Vincent had not been hunting Matteo’s drive.
**He had been hunting the child.**
A crash sounded from the medical hallway.
I drew my weapon and ran.
The surgical room doors stood open.
The surgeon lay unconscious on the floor.
Matteo was gone.
On the operating table, written in blood, were six words:
**BRING LILY, OR YOUR BROTHER DIES.**
But beneath the message, almost hidden under the tray, Matteo had scratched a second line with his fingernail.
**DO NOT TRUST ELENA’S BLOOD.**
I slowly turned.
Elena stood behind me.
And for the first time, I wondered whether the woman my brother loved had lied about more than her name.
# **PART 4 — THE SECRET INSIDE LILY’S BLOOD**
Elena read Matteo’s warning and staggered backward.
“I don’t understand.”
“Your blood saved him,” I said. “Why would he tell me not to trust it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Think carefully.”
Her eyes filled with fear.
Then she looked toward the room where Lily slept.
“My mother,” she whispered.
“What about her?”
“She once told me I was adopted.”
The words fell quietly, but their meaning shook the room.
Elena explained that her mother had confessed the truth only once, during an argument when Elena was seventeen. No documents existed. No agency records. No names.
