“What did he say?”
“He threatened you.”
I looked up.
“Me?”
“He told me he knew someone on your firm’s board. He said one phone call could destroy your career.”
My mouth went dry.
“He said he’d make sure you lost the house because everything important was in his name. He said you’d end up sleeping in your car.”
“Oh, God.”
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“He told me it would be my fault.”
Then she reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small digital recorder.
“I started recording him.”
She pressed play.
Kevin’s voice filled my living room.
Calm.
Controlled.
Unmistakable.
He was telling my daughter exactly what he would do if she told me about the missing money.
