Talking to my roses.
Taking care of living things.
I opened the window.
The air came in.
I could smell the roses from here.
My phone rang.
It was Mr.
Higgins.
"Mrs.
Garrett, I wanted to let you know.
The district attorney filed formal charges this morning.
Tampering with medication.
Elder endangerment.
Fraud.
The recording and the toxicology report were enough to move forward."
I sat down at Mr.
Sloan's kitchen table.
"David?"
"He turned himself in this afternoon.
His attorney is negotiating a plea."
"Did he say anything?"
Mr.
Higgins paused.
"He asked me to tell you he was sorry."
I looked out the window.
