The Doll Recorded What Michael’s Mother Did in the Kitchen

In the consultation room, everyone looked at his wrist.

Daniel pulled his sleeve over the watch.

The recording continued.

Clara demanded to know what they were discussing.

Daniel told her it was family business.

Clara said she had received a notification from the bank before Evelyn took her phone.

“Michael will see the transfers,” Clara warned.

“Michael sees what I tell him to see,” Evelyn answered.

Michael opened his eyes.

The sentence hurt more than he expected.

His mother had spent years presenting herself as the person who knew him best.

She corrected Clara’s stories, interrupted her at dinners, and explained Michael’s preferences before he could speak for himself.

He had mistaken control for concern because it came wrapped in the language of motherhood.

On the recording, Clara said she would call the bank and the police.

Daniel’s tone changed.

“You are not calling anyone.”

There was a struggle.

Lily cried out.

Something struck the table.

Then Evelyn spoke in a low voice.

“This is exactly why Michael should have custody.

Look at you.

Agitated.

Confused.

Frightening the child.”

Clara replied, “You stole from us.”

“Prove it.”
