On the morning of the grand opening, Phoebe stood outside the little shop and watched the woman cut the ribbon.
Her grandfather stood beside her.
“You did this,” he said.
“No.
She did.” Phoebe nodded toward the woman.
“I just wrote the check.”
“You did more than that.
You turned the worst day of your life into something that helps other people start again.”
Phoebe watched the woman’s first customer walk through the door.
“That’s all any of us can do, isn’t it?”
Charles put his arm around her.
“That’s all any of us needs to do.”
The bell above the bakery door chimed.
