Richard’s voice dropped low.
“You know her because she’s your sister.”
Gasps exploded across the ballroom.
Evelyn staggered backward.
“That’s impossible.
She d*ed years ago.”
“She didn’t,” Richard said.
“And you knew that.”
Claire grabbed Richard’s arm.
“Dad, stop.
They’re here.”
Richard looked toward the ballroom doors.
The three men in dark suits had entered.
The silver phoenix pins caught the light.
Every security guard stepped aside for them without a word.
The man in front looked directly at Claire.
“It’s time to come home.”

The man who spoke stood six-two with the posture of someone who had never needed to raise his voice to be heard.
Claire’s hand tightened on Richard’s arm.
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
The man removed a badge from his jacket and held it up.
“Federal Protective Services, ma’am.
My name is Agent Morrow.” He looked at Richard.
“Colonel Hale.
It’s been a long time.”
Richard nodded once.
“Morrow.
I see you’re still carrying that pin.”
“Your daughter’s cover was compromised forty-eight hours ago.” Morrow’s voice stayed even.
“We’ve been monitoring the Prescott family’s communications for eleven months.
When we intercepted the invitation to tonight’s gala, we mobilized.”
Evelyn’s face went white.
“Communications?” She looked at Daniel.
“What is he talking about?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Morrow continued.
“Mrs.
Prescott, you’ve been in regular contact with Victor Ashland’s legal team for the past nine months.
We have sixty-three recorded calls.
Fourteen emails.
And two meetings at the Ashland building in Chicago.”
The ballroom erupted.
Evelyn held up both hands.
“That’s absurd.
I don’t know any Victor Ashland.”
“You married him,” Richard said.
Every sound in the room stopped.
Evelyn’s mouth opened and closed.
“That was thirty years ago.
He passed away—”
“Victor Ashland is alive,” Morrow said.
“He’s been in a private medical facility in Switzerland under a different name for twenty-one years.
