PART 2
Daniel recovered from his shock quickly.
Anger replaced uncertainty as he tried to take control of the situation again.
“You recorded my mother illegally,” he snapped.
“No,” I replied. “She left the voicemail herself.”
Elaine’s lips tightened.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that her own arrogance had become evidence.
Vanessa pointed toward the door.
“You should leave before security removes you.”
I almost laughed.
Even after hearing the recording, they still believed the room belonged to them.
They still imagined I was the frightened wife who would collapse under pressure, apologize for asking questions, and hand over everything they demanded.
Daniel grabbed the envelope from the table and tore it open.
His hands moved quickly, driven by greed and impatience.
But instead of completed transfer documents, he found blank forms.
Beneath them was a copy of my divorce petition.
The final document was a legal preservation notice informing him that he was prohibited from destroying or deleting financial records.
The color drained from his face.
“What have you done?”
I looked directly at him.
“Exactly what you taught me,” I said. “I stopped trusting appearances.”
Before he could respond, the hospital administrator entered the room accompanied by two security officers.
Dr. Patel followed them.
His name and signature appeared on the documents supposedly confirming Daniel’s diagnosis.
The anger on his face was unmistakable.
“I have never treated this man,” he said. “And no legitimate specialist would write the nonsense in those reports.”
Elaine stumbled backward.
“There must be some mistake.”
“There is,” I said. “You forged the wrong doctor’s signature.”
During my career, I had investigated countless schemes involving invented illnesses and fake treatment plans.
