The collapse came quickly. Warren had borrowed against warehouses and promised investors explosive growth based on the federal contract. When the bid disappeared, his projections fell apart. Investors froze funding. A bank demanded updated disclosures. A major client walked away after learning of the federal review flag. Marcus’s gym banned him permanently. The punching bag beside the fence went still. Lily began sleeping through the night again, though she still looked through the window before walking to the bus stop. Fear leaves residue. Even after danger passes, the body remembers. Six weeks later, Rachel came to my door alone. The polished confidence was gone. “Grant says you can fix the contract problem,” she whispered. There it was. Not an apology. A request. “No.” “We’re family.” I looked at her. Months earlier, that might have reached me. Now it sounded like a password entered after the account was closed. “You stopped being my family on the porch,” I said, “when you watched them threaten me and called it jealousy.” She cried.
