Part 4: The Public Challenge

For the next month, the Caldwells became careful whenever neighbors might be watching. Then Marcus began appearing near Lily’s bus stop. He never spoke to her. He only stood by his truck with folded arms until she boarded. After that came eggs thrown at my garage, overturned trash cans, and a dead branch jammed into Lily’s bicycle wheel. Nothing was large enough on its own. Together, it was pressure. Warren wanted us exhausted. Marcus wanted Lily afraid. Rachel wanted me to apologize so she could pretend everything was normal. I kept documenting. On Labor Day, Lily asked to attend the neighborhood barbecue. “I don’t want them to make us hide,” she said. So we went. For almost an hour, things felt normal. Then the music stopped. Marcus walked down the sidewalk with Warren, Rachel, and four men from his gym. His hands were wrapped in fighting tape. When he threw the gloves at my feet, I understood. The small incidents had been building toward this. They did not want us to leave quietly. They wanted a public surrender. Marcus wanted Lily to watch me kneel. Instead, I took off my jacket and stepped onto the grass.
