My heart sank.
The following evening, I placed every receipt on the kitchen table before Troy walked through the door.
“What are these?” I asked.
He stared at them for several seconds before quietly saying,
“It’s not what you think.”
“Then tell me what it is.”
Instead, he became defensive.
He insisted I should trust him but refused to explain where the money had gone or why he kept visiting the same hotel.
For the first time in thirty-six years, silence stood between us.
The next morning I gave him one final opportunity.
“I can’t keep living with questions you’re unwilling to answer.”
He simply nodded.
There were no explanations.
No apologies.
No effort to stop me.
So I called a lawyer.
A few weeks later, we signed the divorce papers across a conference table without raising our voices.
Thirty-six years together ended with signatures, quiet goodbyes, and a mystery I believed I would never solve.
I had no idea the hardest part of the story was still waiting for me.
