The Room Nobody Mentioned
I did not return immediately.
I watched from my car as Nolan entered the kitchen, ate directly from a container and stood at the window as though he were afraid of being seen.
He looked thinner than when he had supposedly left.
He carried a small phone I had never seen before.
After eating, he went back upstairs.
The hidden panel closed behind him.
I called Kelsey and asked her to meet me.
Together, we returned after the security camera showed Nolan leaving through the side door.
Behind the closet wall, we found a narrow storage room created during a previous renovation.
Nolan had once told me the contractor sealed it because the space was too small to use.
It contained a folding mattress, bottled water, packaged food, a portable charger, notebooks and several prescription containers for stress and sleep.
There was also a second phone.
Inside the notebooks, Nolan had written details about my schedule.
“Corinne left at 8:05.”
“Returned at 6:20.”
“Spoke to male coworker in driveway for four minutes.”
“Lacey says Mom had dinner downtown.”
I felt as though someone had removed the air from the room.
My husband had been recording my life.
He had turned our daughter into an unwitting source of information.
On the floor beside the mattress, I found printed photographs of me with my colleague, Brett.
Most had been taken outside our office.
One showed Brett hugging me.
The picture had been cropped so tightly that it looked personal.
The full moment had occurred during a farewell party after Brett accepted a job in another state.
His wife had been standing beside us.
She had been removed from the image.
