It was an explanation
It was a declaration that gave me legal authority over Charles’s estate should anything happen to him. « They’ll come tonight, » Charles whispered. « They think the wedding has made me vulnerable. » At that exact moment, glass shattered downstairs. The nurse locked the door. The lawyer pulled out his phone and called the police. Charles slowly put the ivory mask back on. But this time, I understood.
The mask didn’t hide a monster. It hid a man who had survived one. By sunrise, three members of the Harwood family had been arrested. Charles survived. My father received treatment. My brother returned to university. And me? I stayed. Not because of the contract. Because sometimes the face you fear most belongs to the only person who will tell the truth.

« Dad, please come home quickly. »
« Daddy, please come home quickly. I can’t go on. My back hurts so much. » The trembling voice of 9-year-old Carolina Márquez came through her father’s phone while Esteban Márquez was in the middle of an important business meeting in central Madrid. It was 6 p.m., and the fear in his daughter’s voice sent a chill down his spine. « Carolina, my darling, what happened? Why does your back hurt? »
“I carry Mateo all day,” she sobbed. “Stepmother Jimena said it’s my responsibility to look after him while she rests. He won’t stop crying, and he’s too heavy for me.”
Mateo was Esteban’s one-and-a-half-year-old son with his new wife, Jimena. He weighed far too much for a child Carolina’s age to carry for hours on end. « Carolina, » Esteban asked, his voice strained. « Since you left this morning. » Esteban glanced at his watch. Ten hours. His little daughter had been carrying a baby for ten hours straight. « In her room, watching TV. » « Just breakfast. » Esteban felt his anger turn icy. « Carolina, listen to me. Hang in there a little longer. » « Meetings can wait. » He immediately stood up, interrupting the presentation. « Gentlemen, I’m sorry. » Then he grabbed his jacket and stormed out. On the drive home, he called Jimena three times. Each call went straight to voicemail. When he arrived at his villa outside Madrid, the house was unusually dark.
As soon as he opened the front door
As soon as he opened the front door, he heard a baby crying and dishes clattering. He rushed into the kitchen. What he saw nearly stopped his heart. The room was a disaster. Dirty dishes covered the countertops. The floor was littered with food and spilled liquid. Broken glass lay in one corner. The trash can was overflowing. And in the middle of it all stood Carolina. She stood at the sink, trembling with exhaustion, washing dishes, while baby Mateo was strapped to her back with a sheet, like in an improvised carrier. The baby cried and kicked against her small body. Carolina’s shoulders slumped in pain. Her hair was damp with sweat, her blouse stained with food and baby saliva. She looked far too tired to even cry. Then she turned and saw her father standing in the doorway. « Daddy… » she whispered.
Esteban’s hands clenched into fists. Because in that moment, he understood that this hadn’t been a bad day. It had been going on much longer than he realized. Part 2 is in the comments 👇
For several seconds, Esteban was unable to move. Then Carolina’s knees buckled. He lurched forward, pried the sheet from her small chest, and lifted Mateo from her back. The baby immediately reached out for him, still crying, while Carolina slumped against the kitchen counter, shaking with exhaustion. « Are you okay? » Esteban asked, his voice breaking. Carolina looked down. Those words cut deeper than any business loss ever could. At that moment, footsteps sounded from upstairs. Jimena appeared in the doorway, wearing a silk dressing gown, more annoyed than alarmed. « Are you okay? » she asked. Esteban turned slowly to face her. Jimena’s expression changed when she saw the kitchen, Carolina on the floor, and Mateo in his arms. « She’s overreacting, » Jimena said quickly. Esteban said nothing.
