The Last Letter from Maple Street

Years passed.

Emma attended university to study psychology.

She wanted to help lonely people.

When asked why she chose that career, she always told the same story.

“One letter changed two lives.”

Inspired by their friendship, Emma and Walter started a community project called Letters of Hope.

Schools across America joined.

Students wrote letters to veterans.

To nursing homes.

To children’s hospitals.

To families of deployed soldiers.

To people living alone.

Within five years, more than one million letters had been delivered.

Many recipients wrote back saying those letters arrived on the hardest days of their lives.

Some said they had been considering giving up.

Others said the letters reminded them that kindness still existed.

One small school assignment had become a nationwide movement.

When Walter turned ninety-two, he grew too weak to leave home.

Emma visited every Sunday.

They still wrote letters.

Even though they sat in the same room.

“It’s tradition,” Walter would laugh.

One peaceful autumn morning—the same season when the first letter had arrived—Walter passed away quietly in his favorite chair beside the window.
