The Last Letter from Maple Street

Mrs. Harrison smiled.

“Sometimes the kindest words are meant for strangers.”

Emma thought about that all day.

When she got home, she opened her notebook and began writing.

She didn’t know who would receive it.

She only knew she wanted someone to feel less alone.

She wrote:

“Dear Stranger,

If today has been difficult, I hope tomorrow is kinder.

Maybe you’re worried.

Maybe you’re lonely.

Maybe you’re simply tired.

Whatever you’re carrying, I hope you remember that someone in the world believes you matter.

Even if we’ve never met.

Have a beautiful day.

A Friend.”

Mrs. Harrison collected every letter.

Instead of mailing them normally, she asked students to place them in random neighborhood mailboxes where homeowners allowed community projects.

By pure coincidence…

Emma’s letter landed inside Walter Bennett’s mailbox.

Walter almost threw it away.

The envelope had no return address.

No stamp.

Only two handwritten words.

“For You.”

He slowly opened it.

By the time he reached the final sentence…

His eyes were filled with tears.

No one had written him a personal letter in years.

Someone…

Somewhere…

Had taken the time to remind him that he mattered.

That evening, for the first time in months, Walter cooked dinner instead of eating canned soup.

The next morning he walked farther than usual.

He even waved at neighbors.

Something small had changed.

Hope had returned.
