My Son Hid Dozens of Forks Under His Mattress—The Reason Made Me Question Everything I Knew About My Husband

The First Missing Forks

The mystery began on a Tuesday morning.

I opened the silverware drawer to get a fork for Alex’s pancakes and reached into almost empty space.

Only three forks remained.

I stared at them, confused.

We had owned a large matching set since our wedding. I knew forks occasionally disappeared into lunch bags or were accidentally thrown away, but dozens did not simply vanish overnight.

“Alex?” I called. “Did you take the forks to play with?”

He looked up from his pancakes.

“No, Mommy.”

His eyes were wide and innocent.

“You’re not in trouble,” I assured him. “I just need to know where they are.”

“I didn’t touch them.”

I searched everywhere.

I checked the dishwasher twice. I dug through the trash. I looked beneath the couch, between the cushions, behind the refrigerator, and inside Alex’s toy bins.

For reasons I still cannot explain, I even opened the dryer.

Nothing.

That evening, Brandon came through the door looking more exhausted than usual. He sat on the entryway bench and began pulling off his work boots.

“You’re going to think I’m losing my mind,” I said, “but nearly all our forks are gone.”

He glanced up. “Gone?”

“There are three left.”

He rubbed a hand over his face and laughed.

“Cece, we have a five-year-old. He probably buried them in the yard or used them to build a robot.”

“I already searched outside.”

“Then order another set.”

His answer was casual, but something about his tone bothered me.

It was not what he said.

It was how quickly he wanted the conversation to end.

Still, he looked exhausted, and before I could question him further, Alex ran into the room and climbed onto his lap.

Brandon wrapped both arms around him.

I told myself I was overthinking things.

That night, I ordered forty-eight stainless steel forks online.

Two-day delivery.

Problem solved.

Or so I thought.
