“You did not fail because you lost a job.”
“It felt like I did.”
I placed the second phone on the table.
“What is this?”
“A number for job callbacks. Recruiters, warehouse managers, temporary agencies. Some of them text at five in the morning. I didn’t want you seeing the messages and asking questions.”
“And the apartment?”
He covered his face.
“That was my emergency plan.”
“What kind of emergency plan?”
“If I couldn’t keep paying everything, I was going to move into the studio. You and Alex would stay here. I thought I could tell you we needed time apart and send every dollar I earned home.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“You were going to let me think our marriage was over?”
“I didn’t know what else to do.”
“You could have told me the truth.”
“I was ashamed.”
The word came out barely louder than a whisper.
