The Folder Behind His Clothes
Behind a stack of folded jeans, beneath an old shoebox, I found a manila folder.
Inside were overdue bills.
Credit card statements marked with red notices.
A second phone.
And a printed rental agreement for a studio apartment across town.
Brandon’s signature was at the bottom.
I sat on the edge of our bed and stared at the papers.
The room seemed to tilt around me.
A hidden phone.
Secret debts.
An apartment I knew nothing about.
My mind went immediately to the explanation I feared most.
There was only one person I could think to call.
My sister, Marion.
She answered quickly.
“Cece? It’s late. What happened?”
“I think Brandon is having an affair.”
I heard movement on the other end as she sat up.
“Tell me everything.”
So I did.
I told her about the disappearing forks, the secret conversations, the work trip, the hidden phone, and the apartment.
Her voice hardened.
“A second phone and a secret apartment? You know what that looks like.”
“He said his overtime was reduced.”
“That is exactly the kind of excuse Danny used before he left me.”
“Marion, Brandon isn’t Danny.”
