Lily patted it gently. “You’re improving.”
Nathan bowed his head. “Your generosity humbles me.”
After breakfast, Owen brought Captain to me.
“He wants to see your car.”
“Does he?”
“He likes engines.”
Nathan laughed. “That bear has expanded interests.”
Outside, Owen climbed carefully into the back seat of my car with permission, Captain beside him. He asked questions about every button. Lily sat in the front passenger seat with the door open, pretending to be very grown-up while Nathan stood nearby with coffee.
For the first time in months, I let myself imagine a future not built on crisis.
