Part Six: Building a Different Kind of Family
The weeks that followed changed our family permanently.
An independent attorney reviewed the agreement and the documents connected to Rosie’s trust. Once the truth came to light, my parents resigned as trustees.
Our aunt Margaret, who had always treated Rosie with respect, agreed to take over the responsibility. Every payment Ben had placed into Rosie’s account remained under her control and would be used for her future and the twins.
My parents attempted to explain themselves.
They sent letters. They left messages. They insisted they had acted out of fear rather than cruelty.
Perhaps some part of that was true.
But fear does not excuse taking another person’s future away from them.
Rosie chose not to see them for a while. For once, the decision belonged entirely to her.
News of what had happened spread through the extended family. Some relatives were shocked. Others admitted they had noticed the way my parents spoke about Rosie but had never challenged them.
