My Best Friend Married My Sister—Then I Learned the Secret He Had Been Carrying for Years

Ben did not laugh or hesitate.

He crouched in front of her and looked directly into her eyes.

“When we’re older, I’ll take you to prom,” he said. “I promise.”

Rosie’s entire face brightened.

“You heard him!” she told me, bouncing excitedly. “Ben promised!”

I smiled and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

“You’ll always have us,” I said. “Ben and me.”

At the time, I believed I understood exactly what that promise meant.

Years later, I would learn that Ben had understood it far more deeply than I ever had.

Part Two: The Future I Imagined

Ben became part of the rhythm of our home.

Most afternoons, I heard his bicycle tires crunching against the gravel before he knocked on the door. Rosie would already be waiting near the window, pretending she had not been watching for him.

My mother welcomed him politely. My father usually gave him a distracted nod before returning to his newspaper or work documents.

To Rosie and me, however, Ben belonged there.

As we grew older, my feelings for him quietly changed.

At seventeen, I began imagining a future in which Ben and I remained together forever. I never said anything. I kept those thoughts hidden in private corners of my mind.
