He covered his mouth and began crying openly.
My mother stepped forward, reaching for me.
I backed away.
“Don’t touch me.”
She froze.
“What’s wrong?”
I lifted the contract.
The color disappeared from both my parents’ faces.
“You planned to send Rosie away.”
My father’s expression hardened.
“You don’t understand the situation.”
“I understand enough.”
“We were preparing for her future,” my mother insisted. “We needed to make sure she would be cared for.”
“Rosie was not a problem for you to transfer to somebody else.”
“That is unfair,” my father said. “Every decision we made was intended to protect her.”
I held up the document.
“You tried to purchase a husband for your own daughter.”
My mother pointed toward Ben.
