Part Five: The Truth Reaches the Hallway
Footsteps approached from the far end of the corridor.
The doctor was returning.
Ben and I rose quickly.
Before he reached us, the elevator doors opened, and my parents stepped out. My mother carried her coat neatly over one arm. My father looked as composed as if he had arrived for a business meeting.
They hurried toward us.
“How is she?” my mother asked.
The doctor stopped beside us.
“Rosie is stable,” he said. “Both babies are breathing independently, and their condition is encouraging.”
My knees nearly gave way.
Ben caught my arm as tears blurred my vision.
“She survived,” I whispered.
