“They knew that. That’s why they weren’t planning to tell you until everything had already been arranged.”
I lowered myself onto a nearby chair.
Ben continued, his eyes fixed on the floor.
“They spoke about her as though she were a problem they needed to solve. They said she would eventually require more support and that placing her somewhere else would be best for everyone.”
My hands tightened around the document.
“So they offered you money.”
“They believed marriage would transfer responsibility for Rosie to me. I signed because it gave me a way to stop them. But I did not marry her because of the agreement.”
“Why did you marry her?”
Ben looked up.
“Because I love her.”
