“Listen to me. Every payment they sent was deposited into an account belonging to Rosie. I didn’t spend a cent. The money is hers.”
I stared at him.
“Then why sign the agreement at all?”
Ben slowly slid down the wall until he was sitting on the floor.
“Because I discovered what your parents intended to do if I refused.”
Something in his voice silenced me.
“What were they planning?”
“They had chosen a residential facility called Willow Grove.”
I had never heard the name, but I could tell from the way he spoke that Rosie had never been part of that decision.
“Your mother showed me the brochure,” he continued. “She said you deserved your own future and shouldn’t be expected to care for Rosie.”
My anger faltered, replaced by disbelief.
“I would never have abandoned her.”
