Her face tightened into something cold and unfamiliar.
“She’s manipulating him,” she snapped, pointing toward my mother.
“Margaret has always hated me. She knew exactly how to turn him against me.”
Mom sat at the table in her robe, staring blankly at the wall, playing her part perfectly.
Then she blinked and said,
“Is it Tuesday? I need to feed the chickens.”
Vanessa laughed in relief.
“See? That’s what I mean.”
But the recorder under the table caught everything—her tone, her lies, her desperation.
Dr. Keller leaned toward Mom.
“Margaret, do you know where you are?”
Mom’s eyes stayed cloudy for one long second.
Then she looked directly at him.
“I’m in my son’s kitchen,” she said calmly.
“And my daughter-in-law locked me in a bedroom for weeks while trying to steal my savings.”
Vanessa shot up from her chair.
“That is not true!”
I opened my laptop and played the file I had found buried in the cloud backup Vanessa forgot existed.
Her own voice filled the room.
