Just before dawn, I slipped back into my mother’s room.
“Tomorrow,” I whispered, “I need you to act confused.”
She frowned.
“How confused?”
“Very.”
A slow smile spread across her face, and for the first time since I’d returned home, she laughed.
The next morning, the doctor arrived carrying his evaluation forms while Vanessa confidently placed her carefully prepared file on the table.
Without saying a word, I slid my own evidence folder across the desk.
