He entered as calmly as though he had arrived for a business meeting.
The young woman beside him looked barely old enough to understand the weight of what was happening. She wore a pale pink blouse, flawless makeup, and a pair of delicate diamond earrings that made my heart stop for an entirely different reason.
They were mine.
I had searched for those earrings for weeks after they disappeared from my jewelry box.
My husband smiled as he brought her closer to the bed.
“Maya,” he said, “this is Lila.”
I stared at him, trying to understand how the man I had once trusted could stand there so casually while I was bringing his child into the world.
Lila lifted her chin.
“Daniel told me everything,” she said. “I’m going to raise the baby with him.”
For one suspended moment, even the medical staff seemed too stunned to move.
Then another contraction tightened through my body, forcing me to grip the bedrail and focus on breathing.
The nurse beside me turned sharply toward Daniel.
“Mr. Vale, this is a private medical room. You and your guest need to leave immediately.”
Daniel did not even look at her.
Instead, he placed a thick envelope on the table beside my bed.
Several pages slipped out.
