Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“She’ll be placed under observation before she can contact an attorney.”
Then Dr. Keller’s voice followed.
“What happens to the baby?”
“Lila will sign the documents. Once Maya is under a psychiatric hold, I’ll petition for emergency custody.”
“And if she challenges it?”
Daniel laughed on the recording.
“By then, everyone will think she is unstable. I’ll control the narrative, the doctors, and the money.”
Lila covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“The inheritance remains under Maya’s guardianship unless there is a biological heir. Once I have custody of the child, I can gain access through the trust.”
There it was.
The real motive.
My late father had established a family trust years before I met Daniel. Under its terms, control of several valuable medical patents would eventually pass to my biological children, with me acting as guardian until they reached adulthood.
