State investigators took custody of the blue-bird recorder. Three independent laboratories authenticated the files. Audio specialists compared the voices to public recordings and police interviews.
The results were overwhelming.
The voices belonged to Gavin, Martin Hale, Victor Lang, and Douglas Pike.
Investigators then reopened every piece of evidence from the original case.
What they found was deeply troubling.
The fingerprints on the weapon were Gavin’s, but the recording explained why. He had been unconscious when Pike placed the object in his hand.
The blood on Gavin’s clothing came from his attempt to help Martin after the attack, just as Gavin had always claimed.
