PART 4 — A House Built on Stolen Names
By morning, the story had divided itself into two worlds.
In one world, I was Colonel Ellison, newly appointed commander, reviewing intelligence flows and personnel vulnerabilities with the calm attention expected of me. My staff brought me binders, questions, risk assessments, and coffee. They spoke to me with respect. They argued with precision. They learned quickly that I preferred truth over comfort.
In the other world, my husband had no reliable legal name, my mother-in-law was possibly not his mother, and the house I had been paying for was tied to documents that looked more like a criminal web than a marriage.
Both worlds required command presence.
Only one of them had ever thanked me for showing up.
