Ryan looked past me toward the captain. “She’s doing this because she hates my mother.”
“I’m doing this because my attorney found forged documents with my signature on them,” I said. “Because you attempted to enter a military installation with fake credentials. Because your mother assaulted me while I was unconscious. Because the two of you thought I would resign before I realized what you were stealing.”
His eyes flickered.
There it was.
Not shock.
Calculation.
I had spent years reading men who pretended not to know what they knew. Across negotiating tables. In interrogation rooms. In dusty compounds where one twitch of a hand could change a mission.
Ryan had just confirmed more with a glance than he could deny with a speech.
I turned to the captain. “I will not speak with him further without counsel present.”
Ryan shot to his feet again. “Mara!”
