“No, sir. He was stopped at the gate. The credentials failed authentication immediately.”
I exhaled through my nose, slowly, precisely, the way I had learned to breathe in rooms where panic could ruin everything.
“What did he say?” I asked.
The captain hesitated. “He said his wife had been unstable since receiving a promotion. He said he needed to bring you home before you embarrassed the Army.”
