The Truth Dad Had Carried Alone
We drove home in silence.
The decorations for my graduation party were already hanging in the backyard. Blue and silver balloons bounced against the fence. A banner stretched between two trees.
CONGRATULATIONS, LILY!
It felt as if it had been prepared for someone else.
I sat at the kitchen table while Dad removed his suit jacket. He folded it carefully over a chair.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
He sat across from me.
He looked exhausted.
“Your mother and I dated in high school,” he began. “We broke up for several months after graduation. During that time, she met someone named Adrian Cole.”
I looked at the photograph from the envelope.
The man had my eyes.
“Rachel and I eventually got back together,” Dad continued. “Soon after, she learned she was pregnant. She wasn’t sure who the father was. I told her it didn’t matter to me. I loved her, and I was willing to raise the baby.”
“You knew from the beginning?”
“I knew it was possible.”
After I was born, Dad secretly arranged a DNA test with Rachel’s permission.
The results confirmed that Adrian Cole was my biological father.
Adrian had come from a wealthy family in California. When Rachel contacted him, he offered to support her—but only if she left me behind.
“He didn’t want a baby,” Dad said. “He wanted her.”
“And she chose him.”
Dad looked down.
