“What?”
“Seventeen hundred dollars. You will transfer it to her today.”
“You cannot be serious.”
“I am completely serious. You invited her to that restaurant. You and your sisters ordered the expensive food. Then you invented a tradition and left her alone with the bill.”
“It was a misunderstanding.”
“It was deliberate.”
She began arguing, but I did not allow her to change the subject.
“You have two choices,” I told her. “You can repay my mother now, or I can send copies of that invoice and restaurant receipt to every person who has ever attended one of our family dinners.”
Another silence followed.
When Clarissa spoke again, her voice was smaller.
“Fine.”
